The prom has to be the highlight of any highschool graduates pre college experience and the possibly the greatest fear of many. Many young women are obsessed for months about what they will wear and of course who they will go with. There has been an entire industry set up to deal with this rite of passage. Dresses, Jewelry, shoes, Corsages and who knows what else.
There has been much violence associated with this icon of cultural Americana. The parties before and especially after have often turned into alcohol filled sexual romps. Many women feel that they need to lose their viginity even if they have been mostly celibate up till that point.
In some cases entire classes run entire projects to raise money to fund rather extravagant Proms.
